Abstract: The moduli space of Riemann surfaces is filled with algebraic curves, but very few of these are isometrically embedded. This talk will present new constructions of these special curves and discuss their relationship to ergodic theory over moduli space, Jacobians with special symmetry, and subgroups of the mapping-class group. Explicit examples give new billiard tables with optimal dynamical properties.
